Federal Council approves reduction of fees for trade mark protection

The filing of a trademark and the extension of the protection period of a trademark will become more favorable in Switzerland in the future. At its meeting on December 16, 2022, the Federal Council approved the revised ordinance of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) on fees.

From July 1, 2023, the filing of a trademark with the IPI will cost CHF 450 instead of CHF 550; furthermore, the fee for the protection of an international trademark in Switzerland will be reduced by CHF 50 for three product classes. In addition, the IPI will grant a discount of CHF 100 from this date if the application is filed electronically. This means that the trademark is protected for ten years from the date of application. After that, the protection can be extended as often as desired for another ten years. As of July 1, 2024, the renewal fee will be reduced from CHF 700.- to CHF 550.-.
